THE HISTORY OF GUM

 

Have you ever wondered when, where, or even how chewing and bubble gum began? Well, chewing gum first started in the 1860's. It was invented by John Curtis. Before there was gum, people used to chew resin (pronounced rosin), latex, grasses, leaves, grains, and waxes.

Dubble Bubble first started in 1928 when it was sold at 5 cents a piece.

50: Greeks chewed resin from the mastic tree

200: Some South Americans chewed chicle, while American Indians chewed resin

1848: The first commercial gum was invented by John Curtis, from Maine

1850: Paraffin wax was popular

1871: Thomas Adams received a patent for a gum making machine

1890: Wrigley's started delivering gum by horses

1893: Juicy Fruit and Spearmint were introduced

1899: The first pink colored gum was made

1900: Chicle and gum balls made

1930: Baseball cards were in bubble gum packs

1940: Rainblo gum was introduced

1950: Harvey's Sugarless gum introduced

1965: Astronauts eat "zero gravity gum"

1968: The 1,000 Dubble Bubble comic was made

1979: The Hubba Bubba gum was introduced
