A volcano is a mountain topped with
vents, holes and craters. When the volcano erupts, lave,
ash, cinder, dust and hot gasses can pour out the top. Magma
(When its deep in the ground) or lave (When it reaches the
earth's surface) is very hot liquid rock. When the lave
cools down it turns to hard black rock. Ash is a gray
material being burned in the volcano. Ash can be carried
into the air for many miles.
Volcanoes occur along the earth's
tectonic plates where molten rock is forced upward from
magma reservoirs deep in the earth. The volcano may be 50 to
100 feet in the ground. As the heat rises over 2000 degrees
F it explodes flying lava and ash into the air. And
sometimes may cause craters flying.
