This is a picture of the Nile River. The Egyptians thought that the flooding of the Nile was a good thing. When the Nile flooded the receding waters left behind rich soil which served as a natural fertilizer. The waters along the river banks was used for farming too feed the people.

The waters around the banks are the only farm land that Egypt has. Even though it only takes up 3% of the country it can still provide a lot of food. Later on a population boom needed them farmers to produce more food.

After the completion of the Aswan Dam the flooding waters stayed in the dam and was released in the dry season. This change in the rivers flow caused the people to use more artificial fertilizer.
