Civil War
For 5 years Kansas and Missouri had their own Civil War. The Civil War came early to Kansas and Missouri and it stayed beyond. More than anywhere else, it was a Civil War that would be a bad for both Kansas and Missouri. Westport was the last major battle for the Civil War, west of the Mississippi River. It was one of the 1,162 battles fought in Missouri.
There were many local men involved with William Quantrill and his raiders. Some local women were arrested for helping and hiding these men. They were held in a warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri. For an unknown reason, the building collapsed killing several of the people. In retaliation, Quantrill, Bloody Bill Anderson, Frank and Jesse James, the Younger brothers, and numerous others, attacked Lawrence, Kansas, killing 150 men and torching the town. As a result, the Union commander in the Kansas City area issued General War Order #11. This order "mandated" the removal of all the western counties’ inhabitants and the burning of their homes, so that they could not hide Confederate guerrillas. This had a direct effect on the Kansas City communities. The people of Kansas City had to prove their loyalty to the United States or suffer the consequences.
