The Battle of Westport was the last military episode in the Civil War. It's sometimes referred to as the Gettysburg of the West. As the Confederates began to leave the area, General Price commandeered a house or field for a hospital for his troops. Within a few hours, wounded and dying filled the house. As the Confederate Army retreated, all mobile wounded were taken from the house. The Union troops then used the homes as hospitals.
In the fall of 1863, "Doc" returned to the Wornall House and occupied the house as his headquarters. About 200 men under Jennison’s command occupied the farm for eight days, burning fences, killing livestock and destroying crops. Wornall was left with over $2,800 in damage to his farm. On October 15, 1864, "The Kansas City Journal of Commerce" reported, "We learn that a gang of bushwhackers robbed Mr. Wornall about four miles from Westport, being close to the state line, night before last. They took his watch, money, and his clothing, even the coat on his back and his underclothing; also two horses. There were eight in the gang."
