The main disasters that happened in the 1900s were floods. When the West Bottom flooded in 1903, 20 people were killed and 22,000 were homeless. On June 10, 1908, the same area flooded again. In 1951, a flood destroyed many homes and disturbed 5,000 head of livestock. The damage was estimated at $900,000,000. This flood was called "Black Friday". The reason for this name was because Westport was flooded with muddy water on a Friday. Twenty-eight people died from that flood. The Flood of ‘93 reached Kansas City on July 10, 1993! Rain was reported 40 out of the 61 days between, May 16 and July 17. This became a record for the most rain in Kansas City. On August 6, the river raised at least 32 feet. Widespread damage was reported in parts of the metropolitan area including the West Bottoms, Kemper Arena, American Royal, Southwest Boulevard, Parkville’s riverfront, and the commercial district of Riverside {both suburbs of Kansas City, MO}.
