Two tragedies happened in the 1980’s. On July 17, 1981, the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s skywalk collapsed; 144 people were killed, with many more injured. On Nov. 29, 1988, an arson explosion at a south Kansas City construction site killed six firefighters. An earlier tragedy happened on April 14, 1900. A fire broke out and completely destroyed the Newhall Convention Hall.
