Loss of Habitat

Loss of habitat is the most serious threat the manatee are facing.  1000 people everyday are moving into the state of Florida.  This growth brings more pollution, litter, boat traffic, run off

Injury from Boats

Manatee usually swim 3-5 miles per hour.  That means they are too slow to get out of the way when a speeding boat comes by.

Litter

Fishing Line, hooks, plastic six pack holders, and other litter are all dangerous to the manatee.

Pollution

Pollution and runoff from construction are destroying the sea grass beds that the manatee need for survival.

Harassment

Human harassment can force manatees to leave the preferred areas in which they thrive.  It can also cause mothers and calves to be separated.
