The manatee
need your help! |
| The manatee
are like sea cows. They live in rivers, estuaries and inshore
areas of Florida. If you should see one you should not be
scared even though they are huge. The manatee is actually a
herbivore (that means that they eats plants). |

The manatees
eat a lot during a day. They eat 10-15% of there body weight in
a variety of aquatic plants every day. If you would like
to see a manatee feeding you can usually find them in sea grass beds. |
| Every
year the manatees are counted from the air. The picture to
the right shows manatee gathering around a power plant.
This year we have broken a record by counting 3,276, the highest
count ever. |

Scientist think that
the reason they are counting so many manatee is because of the
cold weather. |
