The procedure to mummify a dead body was different according to what class you were in when you were alive. Simple procedures were used for the middle class, and more elaborate procedures for the wealthy. The first step of mummification was to use a hook to take out the organs. The lungs, stomach, liver, heart and intestines were all removed by pulling them through the belly button. The brain was pulled out through the nose. According to a legend, when the heart was taken out of the body, it was put on a special scale. The heart was weighed against the feather of truth - the Goddess of Maat. If the heart balanced equally with the truth, then the scale would tip in the right direction, and the dead person would be able to have an enjoyable afterlife. If the scale tipped the other direction, the Devourer (DEV-ORR-ER) would eat the dead person.
