Electricity Usage

If you want to keep your power bill down, or just want to save electricity and fossil fuels, here are just a few things you could do to keep fossil fuels from being burnt.

If everyone did their laundry in cold water, it would save about 100,000 barrels of oil a year.

If all cars averaged 8.9 km per liter of gasoline, it would save about 500,000 barrels of oil a year.

If all appliances were 20% more efficient, it would save about 500,000 barrels of oil a year.

If all homes had their thermostats set at 16 degrees C., it would save about 550,000 barrels of oil a year.

If all homes had 15 cm. of insulation, it would save about 600,000 barrels of oil each year.

If every time you drove a car that had 3 or more people, it would save about 700,000 barrels of oil each year.

You should always turn off all appliances because if appliances were turned off, it would save a lot of electricity. Here is a table of how much electricity it would it use.

A radio uses 75 watts.

A sewing machine also uses 75 watts.

A lamp bulb uses 100 watts.

A television uses 145 watts.

A blender uses 300 watts

A washing machine uses 550 watts.

A vacuum cleaner uses 600 watts.

An air conditioner uses 900 watts.

A toaster uses 1,000 watts.

A hair dryer also uses 1,000 watts.

An iron uses 1,100 watts.

A coffee maker uses 1,200 watts.

A microwave oven uses 1,450 watts.

And a clothes dryer uses 5,000 watts.

One way YOU could make YOUR OWN electricity is by installing solar panels on your roof. They do not cost a lot of money, but could produce enough electricity to keep your power bill down by about 15%.

You should always turn off all electrical appliances not just for your benefit, but for the benefit of nature.
