While in your predicament, you may have to rely on wild food for a while. You may be able to find berries and other things, but your main source of food will probably be meat. To catch small animals, you will probably need to make a snare. You can make this without a hatchet but a hatchet makes it A LOT easier. First you will need to find a snappy sapling. Then chop off the branches and possibly part of the top if it is to tall, then find a stick that is shaped like a tent stake ( like a hook ). Now take cord of some kind about a foot long - you could use your shoe laces - and tie one end of it to the top of the sapling. then take a twig three inches long with the circumference of a penny and tie the other end of the cord to it. Now cut a notch in the twig near the top. Now stick the stake stick in the ground about one and a half feet from the tree, then bend the tree so that you can put the hook of the stake in the notch of the twig, now the tree will stay bent over. Now make a noose so that the bottom of it hangs near the ground when you tie it to the middle of the first cord. Adjust the noose so that it's hanging in front of the notch - twig ( known in a second as the bait stick ) Now put bait on the notch - stick now known as the bait stick, sit back, and admire your work. Make sure that your snare is fairly far away from your camp so you don't scare animals away. The animal will come up to your snare, see the bait, and will stick its head through the noose to get the bait. When it wiggles the bait stick free of the stake, the tree will snap up, closing the noose on the animals neck and lifting it off of the ground to keep it from escaping. Now you can come and kill the animal to eat it ( after you gut and skin it of course ). Note : If you wish you can make the notch on the bait stick shallower than normal so that the animal is snapped up quickly before it can eat the bait and get away. |
