The first president to live in the White House was not the first president, George Washington; it was John Adams, the second president.  John Adams moved into the White House in November 1800.  Abigail Adams hung her laundry up to dry in the East Room; she thought it rude to hang the President's laundry.  There are two flags behind the Oval Office (the President's office): one is the American flag, and the other is the presidential flag.

The design for the White House was created by James Hoban, an Irish American architect.  More than one million people visit the White House every year.  There are 132 rooms in all:  there are 11 bedrooms and 32 restrooms.  On the official tour, visitors only see seven rooms and three halls. The State Dining Room is big enough for 140 people to eat in.  The East Room is the biggest room in the White House.  The White House library has over 2,700 books in it, and all of the books are by American authors.  Included in the White House are a bowling alley, a gym and a game room. Outside, there is a swimming pool surrounded by trees.  The first president to be photographed was John Quincy Adams.
