In October 1944, toward the end of World War II, the Soviets were closing in on the area around Trakehnen, East Prussia. A lot of these horses fell into enemy hands and were destroyed. Some of the private farms took all 800 horses that were left and fled west with them. Food was scarce and on the long journey many died and became ill and lame. Fewer than 100 reached safety. They had wounds, diseases, and burlap bags were frozen to their hooves. The next 10 years were spent rebuilding the Trakehner breed in the West.
Trakehners make excellent dressage horses, are also good for jumping and steeple chasing. Many have done well in the Olympics.HOLSTEINER
