Types of Horses

• ARABIAN HORSES
  are very intelligent and sensitive and are known for their endurance.
• A THOROUGHBRED
  Is a fast light horse. Sometimes their fine light bones cannot stand up to the heavy demands of eventing.
• THE QUARTER HORSE
  was bred for short races. The Quarter horses' strong hindquarters and quick reflexes enable him to "turn on a dime" and to go rapidly from a halt to a gallop. Quarter horses today are used both in english and western competitions as well as in racing.
• THE STANDARDBRED
  is the fastest breed in harness racing.
• THE TENNESEE WALKING HORSE
  is the favorite among riders whose main concern is comfort.
• ANDALUSIAN AND LIPIZZANER
  both have a special ability for the demands of dressage movenment. The Lipizzaner is known for a willing attitude and high intelligence. These qualities make him easy to train.
• TRAKEHNER
  In October 1944, toward the end of World War II, the Soviets were closing in on the area around Trakehnen, East Prussia. A lot of these horses fell into enemy hands and were destroyed. Some of the private farms took all 800 horses that were left and fled west with them. Food was scarce and on the long journey many died and became ill and lame. Fewer than 100 reached safety. They had wounds, diseases, and burlap bags were frozen to their hooves. The next 10 years were spent rebuilding the Trakehner breed in the West.
  Trakehners make excellent dressage horses, are also good for jumping and steeple chasing. Many have done well in the Olympics.
• HOLSTEINER
  are often used as carriage horses. They are elegant sporting horses.
• CLYDESDALE
  Is a Draft horse, able to pull heavy loads. They are often identified as "Budweiser horses".
