Caring for Your Horse

It is very important to care for your horses well. If they are cared for well they will perform for you well. Grooming for shows is quite different from regular day grooming. The horses are not only brushed, often riders put on showsheen. They also braid their horse's mane.

In hot climates the horses are bathed. They are hosed off after a workout. Sometimes they are hosed off before they are worked so that they don't overheat.

Barn and stall with horse.
In hot climates horses sometimes don't have a stall. They are mostly outdoors in a paddock, with maybe a small section that has a roof over it.

In the horse`s stalls in the barn, horses need wood shavings, dirt, and also sometimes hay on the ground to stand on. Horses are usually fed two to three times a day depending on the barn. They also get grain, supplements, and hay to eat. Grain is used for horses depending on how much they work. For example if you would work them really hard each day for a long period of time you would feed a horse two cups of grain, and add vitamins and minerals to it.

You also need to muck the stall every day and sometimes twice a day.

Sometimes in desert areas, sand clear is added to the horses' diet to prevent horses from colicking due to eating sand. There are different kinds of colicks.
