States and Territories
As you probably have
figured out, many of the Australians are from Europeandescent.
The western influence is seen in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania,Queensland,
and western Australia. They have become the states of the CommonWealth
of Australia. The country is completely independent, although
the Monarch of the United Kingdom remains ceremonial head of state.
Every state has its own capital.
The first European colony was Sydney, in New South Wales. Even
today Sydney contains over 3.7 million inhabitants. The Sydney
Opra house is close to the Harbor Bridge.
"Gateway to Australia
" is Sydney's nickname. Victoria's capital , Melbourne, is
the country's main center of finance and also has over 3 million
people.
Australia's most southerly
city, Hobart, is located in Tasmania.
