About the People

Britain had overcrowded jails. They decided that they would establish a penal colony in New south wales.

The first ship to come with the first prisoners was in 1788 in Sydney. They started making more penal colonies in Queensland Victoria, Western Australia, and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), which were all in New South Wales.

When the convicts sentences ended many of them stayed in Australia.
