Basketball History

James Naismith started Basketball, he was an instructor in physical education. He started this at the Internatoinal Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). James Naismith was a proffesor in Springfield School. He devised Basketball in Dec 1891. Later in his life he became a doctor of medicine. He hung up two peach baskets, one at either side of the gym as goals. His YMCA atheletes played the first game with a soccer ball. They never bounced the ball. They passed it back and forth until it got the their side so they could score. When the ball made it into the peach basket, they had to get a pole and stick it in a hole in the peach basket to pop the ball out. The rules of Basketball were established later by the YMCA Amateur Athletic Union. All axioms are still incoporated in todays rule books.
