My Personal Experience in Magic

By "De Gregorio the Great"

My interest in magic started with a trip to Las Vegas. It was my father's birthday and his gifts were three tickets to see Lance Burton live in the Monte Carlo casino. I have to say that it was the best presentation I have seen in my entire life. I went home with my head filled with thoughts like "How did he do that!?" or "I wish I could do stuff like that!" So I started researching the topic tirelessly.

I bought books, I spent hours on the Net and made frequent trips to the nearest magic shop. I practiced for hours with the books I bought and after about three months I decided that my favorite kind of magic is coin magic. Even though coin magic is my favorite I still try to be very well rounded in my studies of illusion. Three months is not a very long time, but I consider myself experienced enough to call myself a magician.

If you are starting out in magic I have a few pearls of wisdom to give to you:

  • Don't neglect your hands. They are the most important part of your act and you must take care of them! Make sure you clip your nails. If your hands are dry at all they are definitely too dry to work with coins, so use some moisturizing lotion or a few drops of glycerin every day.
  • Never go on a shopping spree. Save your money and only buy one or two tricks at a time. That way you will be able to practice more efficiently and perform better.
  • Don't give away your secrets. If someone asks how to do a trick, tell them to go though the library and check out a book on magic.
  • Don't get discouraged. I have been insulted many times by people who say my tricks stink. Chances are, they are jealous of your talent, and you will have lots of talent if you...
  • ...Practice, practice, practice. There is no way you will get good if you don't practice.
