How to Stop Hecklers

By "De Gregorio the Great" and "Dan Man Dini"

Hecklers are certain members in the audience that frequently bombard you with insults such as: "I know how you did that!" and "I can do that!" or, even, "Your tricks are stupid!" It gets very annoying.

Here are some things you could say to a persistent Heckler:

  • If they say something like "I saw what you did!" just say something like,"What? Did you think it was really magic?" But they shouldn't be able to see what you did because you practiced, right??
  • You could also say, "Why don't you come up on the stage and perform for all of these people?" They will usually blush and explain that they don't know any magic tricks.
  • If they say that your tricks are bad and that they hate magic, you could say, "If you think my tricks are bad and you hate magic so much, you really don't have to stay here and watch."

Those are just a few of the things you could say. There are actually some props that help to deal with hecklers. For instance, you could buy a coin that looks just like a nickel, but was hollowed out and is squeezable. You fill it with water and if there is a heckler bugging you, take out the nickel and ask him what it is. Then, when he says it is a nickel, explain that the buffalo on the nickel isn't a normal buffalo. Tell him it is a water buffalo, and then let him have it!
