The Underground Railroad was
used to free black slaves. The Underground Railroad was
really a series of houses in which people hid slaves
overnight. The run away slaves used secret messages such as
songs, words, and quilts to get where they were going. "Free
Blacks" and some whites would give run away slaves clothes,
a place to stay, and directions about where to go next. The
quest of the slaves was to escape from slavery in the south.
They tried to move to the northern United States and on into
Canada. During their quest, they used quilts
to help them. The quilts had many patterns that meant
different things. In addition, the quilts could be used for
various things, but the most important one was for giving
directions.
