A skateboard of the future! The newest fun toy! Except it has no wheels! It hovers in the air, it's the hoverboard! Scientists think that one day this device may actually work.

History

There were never really any hoverboards or thoughts of hoverboards until the early 1990's movie Back to the Future. That made a lot of people think about the possibility of a skateboard that flies. Many people had good ideas but none of them worked. But they still kept trying. Nobody could think of an idea that would actually work.

Now

Now a lot of good theories have been made up. Now, according to the principles of charged particle dynamics, an ion having a charge of moving at a velocity perpendicular to a magnetic field will experience a force, causing the ion to travel in a circle of radius. People say this theory might really work. There are many other theories like that also. So now people are building all sorts of things like that and testing them out. Now they are just hoping that these theories might work.When hoverboards were first seen in the movies, people were very excited. It showed a person riding a board that hovered several inches above the ground in an invisible magnetic energy field. It could even hover over water. The director, Robert Zemeckis, said that when people saw the Mattel logo on the board they were calling to find out where to buy them. But for the time being it is just a futuristic idea.

Later

Scientists are coming up with more theories. And they are hoping that they will work. They think that in a few years they might actually come up with it. They hope that they can come up with it because it would be a fun toy and just a fun thing to have. I personally think it would be a very fun thing, but not as fun as something like a skateboard because with something like that there are tricks you can do. With a hoverboard I don't think that you could do many tricks because you are in the air the whole time.
