Sledding or tobogganing is a winter sport in which a runnerless sled is used. You sit in the sled and slide down an incline or course of snow or ice. American Indians first build toboggans about five thousand years ago to transport goods over over long distances in the snow. Tobogganing became a sport in about the 1880s. Tobogganing was the most popular winter recreation until skiing became popular. Indians made their toboggans first out ofanimal skins stretched tightly over wooden frames. Today toboggans are made with several long, thin boards. Six people can ride at a time in a toboggan.
