Maples are next to Oak. They are best-known as broad-leaved trees. Maple have worldwide distribution in temperate land. Some 120 species are known; about thirteen of them are found in North America. Some are shrubby, but most are medium to large trees. All have palm-shaped, simple, opposite leaves, except Boxelders. Their typical pair, winged fruits are eaten by birds , by squirrels, and by other small animals. Sugar Maple needs no introduction. Everyone knows of its sugary sap, from which maple syrup and maple sugar are made. But, in addition, Sugar Maple is a fine shade and ornamental tree used for street and home plantings. The wood is excellent for furniture, cabinetwork , and wood turning.
