Catfishes are generally warmwater fish. They frequently inhabit mud-bottomed streams, ponds, and lakes, although channel catfish and madtoms like swift, cool streams. Catfishes can live through water with low oxygen levels and lots of pollution. These fish are nocturnal, feeding most actively at night on insects, and fish; plant matter is consumed, also. The sensory whiskers are used to find food at night.
