Gray Birch is often called White Birch, but this name confuses the with several others. This is a small northern tree, often growing in clusters or thickets. It never attain the stature of either our Paper Birch or the European White Birch, which it resembles mainly in the color of its bark. While its thin bark is sometimes like that of Paper Birch, the triangular leaves are distinctly different. Like all Birch, it bears fruit in a narrow cone with many small, winged seeds. Flowers are catkins. Wood- heavy, close- grained, and reddish- brown in color - is used for spools, hoops, and clothespins
