In 1908 Figure Skating was added to the Summer Games because competitions could be held inside. In 1924 Figure Skating became an official Winter Game Sport in Chamonix. Ice Dancing debuted at the 1976 Games in Innbruck. It has been part of the Olympic program ever since. The United States are tied with the Soviet Union/Russia with 39 medals. The United States has been very strong with their ladies singles. They have won more than a third of the events medals. The past two Olympic figure skating competitions have been dominated by the Russians. They won eight out of the ten possible gold medals.
