Dogs are one of the most loyal animals in the world.  Dogs do many things like herding sheep, catching criminals, and guiding people who are blind.  They have gotten their nickname, “Man's best friend.”  Dogs belong to a group of animals called canines.  The canine family includes wild dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes, and jackals.

Dogs were one of the first animals to be domesticated.  This happened over 12,000 years ago.  Then, dogs then were helpful especially for protection.  For example, if  a wolf came into a camp, the dog would bark and would wake everyone up so they could shoot or scare the wolf away.

Today dogs rely on man for food and shelter.  If you do provide them with the necessary food and shelter, you will gain the dogs trust and love.  In the early days dogs were used for protection.  One officer and a well-trained dog could take control of a whole crowd.   They protected, military bases, and patrol boarders mainly.  German Shepard, Doberman Pincher, are mainly used for this job.  A dog can easily help a blind person across the street; help a deaf person with the phone or a knock on the door.  Dogs can help in many ways including helping people in wheel chairs.  Some  dogs that do this are the German Shephard and Labrador Retriever.  Dogs are truly amazing animals.  Without them, the world wouldn’t be the same.
