In 1892 the Gladys City Oil and Gas Manufacturing Company was the first company organized
to develop the potential of the Spindletop area.
Patillo Higgins was the founder of this
company. His partners were George W. Carroll and George W. O'Brien. Patillo Higgins was
convinced that Spindletop Hill was the source of a huge amount of oil. The Gladys City
Company was the key to the development of the oil field.
It was Patillo Higgins's dream for Gladys City to become an industrial metropolis.
However, it never happened. Instead Gladys City became a rowdy boomtown which
eventually became a ghost town, after the boom days came to an end.
