Gladys City

Boiler and Derrick

The building next to the drug store at the Gladys City Museum houses the type of boiler used at Spindletop. It is similar to a train engine and is called a locomotive boiler. Wood, coal, or oil could be used to power this boiler that produced the steam that ran the oil rigs.

All the equipment that powered an oil rig was steam powered. Originally, the boiler was once found on the floor of the derrick which was reconstructed in the center of Gladys City. The equipment was removed from the derrick floor because of a hurricane in 1986 and has not been returned.
