Gladys City

Thomas's Drug Store

The Thomas Drug Store was on the southern side of the city. Ice cream and soda pop were sold at the soda fountain in the front room of the store. Not all of the drillers, roughnecks, and roustabouts were hard-drinking oil-field workers. Many were good Christian men and boys who enjoyed a soda pop more than a drink of liquor.

Dr. Thomas worked in the back room where there was an examination table, doctor's bag, a machine to test for eyeglasses, and a wheel chair. Accidents and injuries were common in the oilfield and there were few doctors. "Doc" Thomas helped as much as he could. He provided medicines, treated injuries from accidents, and even birthed babies.
