Myth #3:  The U.S. was the only country to allow slavery before the Civil War.

Slavery is when one person owns another person. The slave owner is called a master or mistress. Slaves work without pay and are provided with food, shelter, and clothing. Many people may believe that the United States was the only country to allow slavery before the Civil War, but slavery started a very long time before the first European Explorers came to the New World and still exists in some parts of the world today.

Slavery probably started about 10,000 years ago with the growth of farming. Slavery of ancient times reached its peak during the Greek and the Roman Empires when the Jewish people were slaves. Slavery decreased in the Middle Ages when the Roman Empire broke up, decreasing trading between nations and causing less goods to be sold and a decrease in the need for slaves to make the goods. Slavery increased greatly when the Europeans came to the New World during the 1500’s and the 1600’s because the Spanish Conquistadors used slaves to dig for gold and other metals. In the 1800’s, slavery declined with the changing attitudes of the people as they started to wonder if slavery was right.

Slavery of African Americans in the United States started in the American colonies in the 1600’s. Slavery expanded in the Southern United States in the early to mid-1800’s, where large plantations needed many workers to grow cotton, tobacco, and other crops. During that same time, slavery was not needed on the small farms and industries in the North. In the United States, most slaves were black and the owners of the slaves were white. This caused many white people to look down on every black person, even those who weren’t slaves. This was different from slavery in other countries because the United States had such an easy way to tell who was a slave and who wasn’t - the color of a person’s skin. This made it very hard for black slaves to escape because they could be so easily identified. In 1865, after the Civil War, the United States abolished slavery. Although slavery is illegal in most countries today, it still happens in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America.

The United States was not the only country to allow slavery. Slavery has been around in different parts of the world for centuries. Slavery probably started with farming about 10,000 years ago. Over the years, slavery has increased and decreased depending on the year and place. Although the United States abolished slavery in 1865 and slavery is illegal in most countries today, some problems slavery caused in the relationship between black and white Americans continue today.
