Famous New Hampshirites

 

Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795)
  • He was born in  Portsmouth.  Josiah wrote many things including-novels, poetry and stories.  One of his most famous stories was "Story of a Bad Boy."  He was the governor of New Hampshire from-(1790-1794).The most interesting thing about the period of time he served as governor is that he died one year after the period was over.
Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873)
  • This man was born in Cornish.  He was a lawyer.  Chase gained fame for defending fugitive slaves.  Later on he became the U.S. senator  for Ohio.  In 1861 he was the secretary of the treasury  under Abraham Lincoln.  He presided  over the  impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.

  

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (1890-1964)
  •  She was brought up in Concord.  At age fifteen she was a Labor Organizer.  That meant that she helped organize the Industrial Workers of the World.
Barbara Ann Cochran (1951-     )
  • This woman was born in Claremont.  She was a professional skier.  In 1972 Barbara won an Olympic gold medal in the woman's slalom. 
Laura Dewey Bridgman (1829-1889)
  • Laura was born in Hanover.  She was the first American blind and deaf woman to be successfully educated.
These are a few of the very interesting people that grew up in New Hampshire.  Each person has unique qualities that make them special.  It just shows that if you do something great or helpful you will be noticed. 
One of the most famous New Hampshirites is now used as a fictional character in a television show "The West Wing".  Josiah Bartlett's great great grandson plays the part of Jeb Bartlett in the new television series played by Martin Sheean.
