Freaky Facts and Features of Creepy Crawly Creatures of the Rainforest

Vampire Bat

Description

Vampire bats are very flexible on the ground and usually do not approach the prey while in air, preferring instead to crawl. Heat sensors on their noses help them locate a vein close to the skin.

Interesting facts

Scientists recently discovered that the anticoagulant in vampire bat saliva is twenty times stronger than any other known anti-clotting agent. With more research this substance might help with serious human disorders like heart attacks and strokes.

Physical characteristics

Like other bats, vampires may reach 20 years of age. The incisor teeth make a cut. A special anti-clotting agent in the bat's saliva keep the blood from clotting and allows the bat to drink freely (it may take 20 minutes to complete a meal).

Living style

They groom each other and learn to recognize one another through voices and smell. This is important because there are frequently nights in which a bat is unsuccessful at feeding. If this occurs, it can "beg" food from another bat with which it has developed strong bonds.

Food

When a vampire bat feeds it bites its prey and sucks up the blood. Each bat takes about two tablespoons every day.
