Tikal was built around the classic period (A.D. 250-900). It is located in the lowlands of Peten in Guatemala. It is also perhaps the oldest and the largest Maya city. It is spread over 50 square miles (130 sq. km.). The populatiation was probabley between 50 and 100 thosand people. Some people belive that Tikal was abandond around A.D. 889. The city had massive comb towers which were probabley used for astronmey. it was not discoverd until 1695 by a Spanish missionary by the name of Father Andres de Avendano. |

Tikal is also known for it's 8 giant pyramid-tempels. Two face eachother on a huge plaza. The Temple of the Giant Jaguar is155 feet high and the temple across from it the temple of Masks is 143 feet high. A tunnel was found 1962 which led to a secret chamber which was filled marvelous jade, shell, and pearl carvings and jewels. There was also a skelton of a ruler called Double Comb. he began ruling in A.D. 682. |
