Palenque stands at the foothills of the Chiapas highlands in Mexico. It was built as a portal to the underworld in the 8th century, where Maya kings might defeat the Lord Death and return in dreams and visions. In the observatory tower at the center of Palenque palace, small portals were aligned to enable the sighting of Venus throughout the year at its first appearance on the horizon. This was the signal to begin war. Alberto Ruz Lhuillier made a dazziling discovery in Palenque 1952. Huge stones were moved to get to a large staircase which lead to a basement for the temple of inscriptions. There were 5 people by a tomb that held the palenque ruler Pakal.Over his 12 By 7 foot tomb was a slab just a bit bigger.Tubes were found near the tomb in "The Basement" possibly to give messages to Pakal...the palenque leader. |

The Temple of Inscriptions as shown above. The Palenque Palace with The Temple of Inscriptions to the left. These two towers are pretty much as big as regular buildings today. They are right next to each other. In the picture you can see they are a lot alike one an other. The palace is only a bit taller than the Temple of Inscriptions. They both have windows but The Temple has 5 and The Palace has 1. |
