Coba

In Mayan this means "water stirred by the wind", Coba is next to a group of shallow lakes. Coba is famous for the missing king, Chac Balam (Red Jaguar) who disappeared after aged 30.

These ruins were started in AD 600 and covers an extremley large area, 42 square miles! These structures were scattered along a system of sacbe, which means "white roads". Each sacbe was built to exact rules. There was to be a base of stones three to 6 feet high, about 15 feet side, covered with white mortar. The remains of more than 50 sacbe have been found crossing the Peninsula. There are more in Coba than in any other Maya location.

Coba is by Tulum and Chichen Itza. It was one of the largest cities in Mayan times. The tallest building was138 feet and was named Nohoch Mul. There are 32 tall pillars aranged in a very interesting way called Grupo Macanxoc. This city was not only large but mysterious and filled with jungle so there is not very much extevated and not much information.
