An Underwater Garden

Animals living in the coral reef include many shelled creatures. Most shelled creatures are invertebrates, which means they have no backbones. All seashells are made by the animals that live inside of them, and all grow steadily outward.

Conch Shells

There are about 100 types of conch shells. The best known is the large pink conch from the West Indies, a shell that is often used as food and as an ornament.

Abalones

Shells that are known for the rainbow-sheen Mother-of-pearl on the inside of the shell are call abalones. They are relatives of limpets and top shells. They graze on algae and are themselves eaten as a seafood delicacy.

Bivalves

Bivalve creatures are mollusks whose shells are divided into two parts. Bivalves such as scallops, oysters and clams are the most popular form of shellfish to eat. They are are found in many parts of the world.

Scorpio Conch

The Scorpio conch lives on coral reefs and has distinctive spines that enable it to crawl on the sand around the reef without being swept away by strong underwater currents.
