Most rays have a flat, disklike body with large pectoral fins which form "wings." and live on the sea floor. Rays, like sharks, have a boneless skeleton made of a tough, elastic substance called cartilage. They feed on such bottom-dwelling creatures as clams, oysters, shellfish, and certain fish. Rays have slotlike body openings called "gill slits" that lead from the gills. Ray eggs are fertilized inside the female's body and hatch inside the female. The young are born alive. |
