Hummingbirds

The hummingbird is a special bird in the Tropical Rain Forest. The hummingbird is one of the most colorful birds in the world. The colors of a hummingbird include blue, green, and purple. The hummingbird's nose is long and pointed. It uses it's beak to reach inside the flowers to suck out the nectar. Also, this colorful bird visits many flowers each day to get enough food to survive.

A hummingbird is an extremely small animal. The smallest species of the hummingbird family is about three inches long and weigh less than an ounce. The hummingbird's feathers get dusted with pollen. Their wings flap very fast so they can stay in one place at a one time.

The hummingbird lives in the canopy of the Tropical Rain Forest. They are found mostly in South America. They build long, haning nests that are attached to large leaves. The nest is shaped like a small cup. The materials they use are spiderwebs and small pieces of bark.

Did you know that the hummingbird is the only bird in the world that can fly back wards? Also, in South America, there are over 235 types of hummingbirds. Finally, the most interesting fact about the hummingbird is how they got their name. Their wings flap so fast that they make a noes that sounds like a hum. That is how the hummingbird got its' name!
