Treasures of the Tropical Rainforest

Marmosets

Marmosets have long, soft, silky hair and many of them have tufts, manes, crests and moustaches. Marmosets do not have fingernails, but instead have claws. They have long balancing tails which are longer than their bodies. Marmosets are very active monkeys, constantly turning their heads in all directions to scan for predators.

Marmosets live in large family groups of up to 15 animals made of one breeding pair and their young of various ages.

They live in the tropical rainforests of South America and in patches of forest along the edges of rivers and streams.

They are the smallest of South American monkeys.

The Pygmy marmoset is the tiniest monkey in the world. It is only about 15 inches long, including its tail, and weighs only 7 inches.

Marmosets eat small animals such as spiders, insects frogs, lizards and snails and fruits and flowers. They also like to drink tree gum.

Marmosets are active during the day and spend most of their time foraging for food.

They are also very social.
