Brain Power

There are four lobes of the brain:

OCCIPITAL LOBE

Located at the back of the brain, behind the parietal lobe and temporal lobe.

Concerned with many aspects of vision.

FRONTAL LOBE

Located in front of the central sulcus.

Concerned with reasoning, planning, parts of speech and movement (motor cortex), emotions, and problem-solving.

TEMPORAL LOBE

Located below the lateral fissure.

Concerned with perception and recognition of auditory stimuli (hearing) and memory (hippocampus).

PARIETAL LOBE

Located behind the central sulcus.

Concerned with perception of stimuli related to touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

The brain grows at an amazing rate during development. At times during brain development, 250,000 neurons are added every minute!! At birth, almost all the neurons that the brain will ever have are present. However, the brain continues to grow for a few years after birth. By the age of 2 years old, the brain is about 80% of the adult size.
