How to fish for bluegill or Lepomis macrochirus
The bluegill is possibly the most common and most widely introduced sunfish in the world. The coloring is like an olive-green with 5 to 7 dark vertical bands which go away as they approach the middle of the fish. Shrimp, scuds, ants, and insects are what they like to eat. They would usually ambush their prey. It's really easy to find. It can be challenging on light fly fishing. It's easy for kids to fish for, too. Its average weight is 0-2 pounds. Livegrass shrimp, deadly baits for bluegill, are not widely available. They usually spawn in about 70 -75 degrees water. Spawning begins in May or June but continues until water cools down in the fall. Bluegill's common names are bream, blue bream, sun perch , blue sunfish, copperhead, copperbelly, and roach. They are found in Florida and the United States because of their widespread stocking. They can lay up to 50,000 eggs. They will usually eat their eggs. Crickets are a favorite bait, especially with anglers down in the South. You can do it to with grasshopper, if you can't get crickets.
