The Peloponnesian War was not one big war. This war was split up into three different parts. The three parts are the Peace of Nicias, the Archidamian War, and the Decelean or Ionian War. Back in Ancient times the most powerful military was the Athenians, but after the Persian war their army was not so strong. After fighting the Persians their army and navy were warn down. So why the Athenians were recovering from the Persian war, the Spartans were building up their navy and army. You might think Spartans as Michigan State Spartans but these Spartans came from a city-state called Sparta. Most of the people in Sparta did not have the honor of being called a Spartan only fighters had the honor of being called a Spartan. As Sparta worked on their army the Athenians worked on building a powerful navy. Both sides thought their strategy would ware down the other side but the Spartans knew that the Athenians had a very powerful army so they asked their allies to help defeated the Athenians navy. Both sides fought for ten years straight but the Athenians and their walls defended their city-states. This was called the Archidamian war. After both sides were warn down they signed peace treaty some time between 421-414 B.C. called the Peace of Nicias. This peace treaty was called to last thirty years but it lasted only seven years. It only lasted seven years because 415 B.C. one of Sparta’s allies (Athenians) were convinced to attack the Greek city-states. Sense the Athenians were still allies with Sparta they attacked the Greek city-states. So when the Athenians attacked they had not military back at their city the Spartans attacked them. When the Spartans arrived at Athenians city-state they were met by one of their allies (Persians) and went on to somewhat defeat the Athenians. So when the Athenians came back from the attack of the Greek city-states all they found was dead bodies and runes. Then they saw the Persian and Spartans army and were furious. So they attacked them but did not come up as luck as they had. They found out that their navy was mostly destroyed and were captured so they had to give up in 404 B.C. This war was called the Decelean or Ionian War. From that day on the Athenians great days like the Age of Athens, the Age of Pericles, the Classical Age, the Athenian Empire, had all come to an end. |
