Ancient Greek festivals were very important to the
culture and the people. The ancient festivals are similar to the sports we have
today, but they are also different. The Ancient Olympics are one of these
festivals. The Ancient Olympics are where our Olympics originated from. Like the
Ancient Olympics, women had their own type of Olympics since they couldn’t
compete in the actual Olympic games, only for men. The Isthmian, Nemean, and
Pythian games were a smaller version of the Olympics, because there were fewer
games to compete in. Visit the ancient festivals section and learn many
interesting facts about ancient games.
OlympicsThe Olympics started in 776 B.C. to honor the gods and spirits of the deceased (dead), and it was held every four years. Well, they actually didn’t honor all the gods, they mainly honored Zeus because he was the ruler of all gods. NemeanThese games had music and athletic competitions. They also honored Zeus. They were held southwest of Corinth. PythianThese games were held at Delphi. They honored Appollo, the god of poetry. These games had music and athletic competitions too. IsthmianThese games were held at the port of Corinth to honor Poseidon, the god of the sea. They were held in the same year as the Olympics and the second year after them. WomenYou would think that the women in Ancient Greece would be able to watch and play in the Olympics like they do now. Actually in Ancient Greece women were not even allowed to watch the men play. In this paper you will find out why they were not allowed to watch or play in the ancient Olympics. |
