Echoes

Bat’s hearing is much better than ours, but we still learn a lot from the way they hear.  Shout in different rooms of your house and areas outside and compare the echoes.  Echoes will most likely be louder outside.  In most cases rooms with carpet, soft furniture etc. will not have as many or as loud echoes.  Echoes could be loudest of all though, in your bathroom.

Keep an Animal Journal

Dr. Jane Goodall and the other zoologists work in the field, they keep a journal.  They write down what they see and what they hear.

You can keep a journal about the wild animals that live near your.  The record should include what you see and what you hear for several weeks.  Then begin by writing the time and the date.  Write down as many details as you can.  You can make sketches of the animal that you see.  From a distance watch the animal so that you don’t affect the way the animal acts.  What new thing can you discover about the animal’s behavior?

Now go out at night.  Look for an animal to observe.  Try to answer these questions.  What does the animal do during the night and day? What other kind of animals live around it?  How do those other animals interact around the animal?  What does the animal eat?  How does the other animal get its own food?  Where does the other animal live?  Does the other animal have babies?

Navigation

Did you know that dolphins may have a built-in compass?  Would you like to make your own compass?

Tie a string in the middle of a bar-shaped magnet.  Let the magnet hang straight down.  The magnet will point to the North, mark that end with a piece of tape. (If you are not certain which way North is, check with an adult.) Mark a staring point with tape. Then navigate your course with the magnet.  Try this:

Go:

1.        4 steps North

2.      3 steps South

3.      1 step North

4.      5 steps West

5.      5 steps South

6.      2 steps East
