Power of the Storm
Hurricanes are very harmful to the land areas they strike. Storms can
blow down signs, power lines, and tree branches. Stronger storms can
destroy buildings, uproot trees and cause great flooding. Ships at sea are
sometimes damaged severely, but most of the time ships are "ok",
because they steer out of the way of the storm.
Hurricane damage is mostly caused by wind and water. Hurricane winds pull trees out of the ground and tear the roofs off houses. The winds can put planes in danger, if the pilots don't fly around them. Heavy rains can cause flooding and mudslides. The most dangerous part of a hurricane is when it comes to waves over sea level. This is called storm surge.
Fish and wildlife are also affected by the storms. Flood waters drown many smaller animals, and fish are killed by the pollution of the flooded rivers and streams.
