Naming Hurricanes
In the West Indies hurricanes were named for hundreds of years after particular saints. But in the United States, The National Hurricane Center didn't start naming storms until 1953. They began naming them so that if two occurred at one time they would not get them mixed up. The names come from an alphabetical list of male and female names. The names of hurricanes are retired when the hurricane is really big and destructive.
