Category 1- breaks off tree branches and blows down power lines; winds under 74-95 mph.

Category 2 - blows down large signs and tree branches; winds are 96-110 mph.

Category 3 - causes minor damage to buildings, trees and houses; winds are 111-130 mph.

Category 4 - destroys thousands of homes and kills people; winds are 131-155 mph.

Category 5 - destroys buildings and entire towns; winds are 155 mph or more.
