The river terrapin prefers the rapid currents of Indian forests and the island of Sumatra . Small population can be found near the sandy roasts of eastern India and some of the nearby islands.

Local people regularly steal the eggs of the river terrapin and eat them as a source of food. They sometimes hunt the adult River Terrapin as well. As in the case with many turtles, the river terrapin is especially easy prey during egg laying season time when it crowds the river banks.

The female river terrapin lays its eggs between January and February on sandy banks such as the banks of India's Batagur  river as with sea turtles the river terrapin has specific  places where it  lays it's eggs and gathers in many groups of hundred's.

Recent government measures  in India place a limit on the number if the river terrapin eggs that can be gathered. A small fraction of these eggs is collected to be artificially incubated and reared in protective environments.

The river terrapin has a vast distribution are unlike other river turtles in Asia , it prefers rapid river currents in steal of still waters.
